YouTube Tag Generator

What the YouTube Tag Generator does

You type a keyword, pick a language, and the tool gives you a list of tags for a video on that topic. The language menu has more than 70 options, so you can generate tags for a Spanish tutorial or a Vietnamese vlog as easily as for an English video. It takes a few seconds.

How to use it

  1. Type the main keyword of your video in the box above. Use the phrase a viewer would actually search, like "how to bake sourdough", not just "bread".
  2. Choose the language of your video.
  3. Click Generate. Sample loads an example so you can see how the tool works, and Reset clears the form.
  4. Read the list and delete anything that doesn't describe your video. Then open the video in YouTube Studio and paste the rest into the Tags box.

What tags can and can't do

Be realistic about them. YouTube's own help page says the title, thumbnail and description matter more for discovery, and that tags play a minimal role. They help most when your topic is commonly misspelled. A generator won't rescue a weak title. What it saves you is the dull part: building a clean list of keywords and variations in a minute instead of twenty.

How many tags should you add?

There is no fixed number. The whole Tags field gets a budget of 500 characters, and the commas between tags count toward it, so short tags let you fit more. You don't have to fill it. Eight to twelve focused tags is a sensible range for most videos, and a short list of accurate tags beats a long list of loose ones.

Choosing tags that fit

  • Use your main phrase as a tag, and put it in the title and the first lines of the description too.
  • Mix a couple of broad tags with more specific ones. "Sourdough" is broad. "How to feed a sourdough starter" is specific.
  • Add a common misspelling of your topic or product name if people really do spell it wrong. That is the one case where YouTube says tags earn their place.
  • Keep tags out of your description. YouTube says excessive tags there go against its spam and deceptive practices policies.

For a video about feeding a starter, a reasonable set might be: sourdough starter, how to feed a sourdough starter, sourdough for beginners, sourdough maintenance, bread baking.

Tags are not hashtags

Tags sit in a hidden field in YouTube Studio, and viewers never see them. Hashtags are the clickable words that can show up next to your video title. If you want those, try our YouTube Hashtag Generator. To see what other videos in your niche use, run a few of them through the YouTube Tag Extractor and compare their tags with your list.

FAQ

Will these tags make my video rank higher?

Don't count on it. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery, so spend your effort on the title, thumbnail and description first and treat tags as a finishing touch.

Which language should I pick?

The language your viewers search in. For a Spanish video aimed at Spanish speakers, pick Spanish.

Do I have to use every tag it gives me?

No. Delete any tag that doesn't describe your video. A tag that misleads viewers won't help anyone find the video, and YouTube's policies are aimed at misleading metadata.

Is the tool free?

Yes, it is free.
